Self-Care has become increasingly important in our fast-paced world, especially during the holiday season. When we’re mindful of taking care of ourselves, we can positively impact our attitude, health, and energy.
We often rationalize neglecting ourselves, saying, “there’s not enough time,” or “too many people need me.” But taking care of ourselves is our most basic need. Taking care of yourself allows you to fully and completely show up for others.
What is self-care?
It’s anything that you need in order to be happy, confident, and whole. It’s a practice that you cultivate over time to help you to feel more loving, peaceful and mindful. Feeding your body nourishing foods, reading a good book, taking a hot bath, getting a massage, taking a yoga class, meditating, listening to music, journaling, connecting with friends, drinking your morning coffee by the fire, and moving regularly throughout the day.
What is self-care is not
Self-care is not selfish. You shouldn’t feel guilty about taking time for self-care. It’s not indulgent and it’s not something you deserve because you crossed off 10 things on your to-do list. It’s something that every person on the planet is deserving of because they are human.
What are the benefits of a self-care practice?
Taking time daily to relax and unwind decreases the likelihood of negative feelings building up over time and allows you to be more present, loving and mindful. Over time, your body will be healthier and your mind more at peace.
How can I fit self-care into my daily life?
One of the ways to begin and sustain a self-care practice is to fit it into your existing schedule. When you look at self-care as something that requires special time to be set aside, it becomes less daunting.
Thoughtfully look at your daily schedule and think about where you can insert a walk, get a massage, connect with a friend, or find time for any other self-care practice that you enjoy. It doesn’t have to take up too much time and can be a quick way to re-energize.
