Last Friday my husband and I had decided to stay in for the night. We had a wedding the next day and had been running around like crazy all week. We ate dinner and were just sitting on the couch watching TV. I was in a social media trance and barely even paying attention to what we were watching.
Suddenly he got up off the couch, turned the TV off, lit a candle, turned on some music and poured 2 glasses of wine. At first I was confused, not to mention annoyed (hello I wasn’t done scrolling through my Facebook feed yet!). He turned to me and said “We have been so busy lately. Let’s spend some quality time together right now”.
And BOOM just like that Insta-Date! The night went from getting lost in mindless television to getting lost in each other. There was talking, connecting and having fun. After all isn’t that really all you need? It took almost no effort other than turning off Cops (Justin’s going through a phase where he is obsessed with watching the show Cops) and pulling me out of my Facebook trance. There was no planning, fancy dinners or outfit selections, but this was a real legitimate date.
That got me thinking. What else could you do right now to turn an average night into an Insta-Date?
Here is my list of 10 ideas for an Insta-Date:
- Dance Party
Turn up the tunes and get to dancing! You can do this any time of day or anywhere. It’s a great way to let loose and have some fun with your partner.
- Star Gaze
Get outside, grab a blanket and snuggle up. It doesn’t get more romantic than being outside in nature under the stars.
- Cook Dinner Together
If you live together cooking dinner is a daily chore that most of us hate (luckily my husband cooks every night). Turn this into something fun for the both of you. Try cooking something you haven’t before or your favorite meal from a restaurant. The point is to do it together and get creative.
- Build a Fort
This may sound childish but that’s the point! Who didn’t love building forts when you were a kid? As an adult it’s no less fun. Grab some blankets and construct a fort. Bring in some snacks and wine. You might be in there a while 😉
There are a million YouTube channels where you can put on your favorite songs and sing along. Grab a hairbrush for a mic and take turns singing your heart out.
- Go for a Walk
This time of year is perfect for checking out the foliage. Get outside and take a walk in your neighborhood or park. It’s a great way to enjoy nature and each other’s company.
- Movie Night
If you guys typically sit home and watch movies on Friday night, it might not feel much like a date. Try making it special by grabbing some of your favorite movie candy or adding some truffle oil and sea salt to your popcorn. It will make the night feel a lot more special.
- Have a Fire
Whether it’s outside or inside cuddle up next to the fire to turn up the heat. Enjoy a glass of wine while you spend time together reconnecting.
- Take a Bath
Hot water? Bubbles? Naked? What else do you need to turn right now into a romantic evening for 2?
- Turn off All Technology
Except for music of course. Spend this time talking and reconnecting with one another. Keep the distractions of the outside world outside of your relationship for just a few hours.
Now that I’ve given you some ideas, there’s no excuse not to turn right now into an Insta-Date. The point of an Insta-Date is that you can do it anywhere and at any time. So grab your significant other, turn off the TV and get on that date!
